Our ER1 Emergency Department and The Heart Center of Niagara represent an investment by Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center of $20 million toward better health for the Greater Niagara region. Located on the corner of Walnut Avenue and 10th Street and connected to the medical center by an overhead walkway, this 56,000-square-foot signature building reflects the emphasis Memorial puts on improved emergency services and cardiac care.

It also enhances Memorial's status as the first emergency room in Western New York that to be fully integrated with a cardiac care center, giving patients 24/7 access to non-invasive CT scan diagnostic imaging.  ER1 is also an important component of Memorial's New York state-designated Stroke Center, the most experienced such center in Niagara County.

Cutting edge critical care in ER1 actually begins right in your home whenever an ambulance comes to your door. Paramedics are able to connect you to a multiparameter monitoring device that will transmit your vital signs and a clinical-quality electrocardiogram directly to our ER doctors, all of whom are board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. This means doctors will be able to evaluate your status in real time and issue potentially lifesaving orders for your treatment before you even arrive at the hospital.

Medical coverage at ER1 is provided by Keystone Healthcare Management, a physician group established in 1996 to provide high quality care using residency-trained, board-certified emergency medicine physicians.

Here are some important facts about ER1:

• ER1 doctors are emergency room trained and board certified in emergency medicine, giving Memorial lifesaving capabilities previously lacking in Niagara County.
• ER1, which opened in 2006, encompasses 22,000 square feet including admitting, waiting areas, etc.  It is nearly three times the size of our former emergency department.
• ER1 can accommodate 25 patients at a time: 12 medical, three triage, four "fast track," four behavioral health and two trauma.
• In the event of a disaster, the waiting room is equipped with built-in surge capacity so Memorial can expand its triage capabilities quickly and easily.
• A state-of-the-art paperless clinical tracking system speeds incoming patients through the admission and treatment process.

ER1 also has the only dedicated psychiatric emergency department in Niagara County, providing comprehensive psychiatric assessments 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Assessments are completed by specially trained registered nurses, physicians and psychiatrists and include nursing assessments, psychosocial assessments, medical histories and physical exams. Upon completion of each assessment a disposition will be made regarding admission or outpatient follow-up care.
