Memorial cancels Monday flu shot clinic

A spike in demand at a flu shot clinic held Saturday (Nov. 19) exhausted Memorial Medical Center's supply of vaccine and forced the cancellation of a clinic scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21.

After immunizing some 440 area residents during two clinics held in late October and using up its initial supply, Memorial received a second shipment containing more than 500 doses of influenza vaccine 10 days ago. That shipment was allocated for use at clinics Saturday and Monday. However, nearly 540 people received influenza vaccinations Saturday, depleting the medical center's supply and leaving no choice but to reschedule Monday's clinic.

A third shipment of vaccine is expected to arrive sometime during the next several weeks. When it does, Memorial will announce additional clinic dates.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, delays in the distribution of some of the country's flu vaccine mean some people will have to wait until late November or early December to get their flu shots. Flu vaccine is still effective if administered in December, although most people get flu shots in October and November.
