Memorial celebrates World Breastfeeding Week

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center joined with La Leche League International to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7.

The theme for this year's event was "Breastfeeding and Family Foods." The focus was on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months after birth with the gradual introduction of nutritious solid foods while breastfeeding is continued. This goal reflects the recommendations of health associations worldwide including the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding provides children with invaluable immunological protection against ear infections, allergies, intestinal disorders, meningitis, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, diarrhea and pneumonia.

La Leche League is an internationally recognized authority on breastfeeding and maintains a mother-to-mother network in more than sixty countries. The Niagara Falls chapter meets monthly at Memorial Medical Center. For more information, call 471-3389 or 278-4527.
