Echocardiogram

Many radiological exams require specific patient preparation prior to the exam in order to insure that the study is performed in the safest and most accurate manner possible. If you are scheduled for the following study, follow the instructions exactly as written. If you have any questions or feel that you cannot comply with the instructions, be sure to call the Department of Cardiology at (716) 278-4404.

Before the Test:
There are NO dietary restrictions prior to this test.

During the Test:
This test will be completed in 20 to 30 minutes.
Having an echocardiogram is similar to an Electrocardiogram (EKG).
A technician will place a transducer and electrode patches on your chest.
The transducer directs sound waves toward the chambers and valves in your heart.
As the sound waves bounce off the heart muscle, they are converted to signals and recorded on video tape.
At certain times during the test, your heart sounds will be recorded.
It is important that you lie quietly during this test so the transducer can be placed at the exact angle. You may also be asked to turn on your side or to briefly hold your breath.
