Niagara County agencies to host experts on family violence and its prevention at Oct. 28 program

The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, YWCA of Niagara and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence Program will host a presentation by two nationally recognized experts on family violence and violence prevention on Oct. 28.

“The Intersection of Mental Health and Interpersonal Violence – Translating Research into Advocacy” will feature Catherine Cerulli, J.D., Ph.D, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Rochester and Suzanne Tomkins, J.D., a University of Buffalo Law School professor and co-director of the Program for Excellence in Family Law.

The morning program will begin at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Medical Center Auditorium. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

"The organizers of this Domestic Violence Awareness Month event are honored to have nationally recognized experts, Dr. Kate Cerulli and Suzanne Tomkins, J.D., as co-presenters on the topic of the intersection of mental health and interpersonal violence,” said Mary Brennan-Taylor, vice president of programs at the YWCA of Niagara. “Both speakers are well respected leaders in the field of domestic violence prevention and more specifically, translating research into advocacy for victims."

One in four women is a victim of domestic violence and 15.5 million U.S. children live in families in which partner violence occurred at least once in the past year. The organizers of the event hope to spread awareness of this tragic and far-reaching issue in order to put an end to its painful effects.
