UNYTS honors Memorial CCU clinical coordinator

Upstate New York Transplant Services has named Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center's Janice M. Paternostro, RN, a 2007 Donation Champion.

The award honors individuals and institutions who work to further donation and transplantation at the hospital level.  Paternostro is the clinical coordinator of Memorial's James S. Hill Critical Care Unit.

The awards event was held at The Burchfield-Penney Art Center on the campus of Buffalo State College.

"It is important for Upstate New York Transplant Services to take the time to recognize the hospitals in our network," said President & CEO Mark J. Simon. "No matter how many individuals we register or how many we educate about donation, it is still the hospital clinical staff who are the first to offer families the option."

"Janice has done an excellent job at Memorial individually and engaging the staff in the vital and sensitive process of organ donation," said Chief Nursing Officer Joanne Krolewski, BSN, RN, upon presenting Paternostro for the UNYTS award.

In 2006, the Western New York Region had almost 1,000 organ donors and recorded increases of 112 tissue donors and 93 eye donors.

"In addition, our organ consent rate was over 80 percent – 30 percent higher than the national average," Simon said.

Since 2004, Memorial Medical Center has accounted for four organ donations – including two in a 24-hour period last October – as well as 44 tissue donors and 50 eye donors, said UNYTS Organ Services Manager Phyllis Murawski RN, BSN, CPTC.

Headquartered in Buffalo and established in 1981, Upstate New York Transplant Services is among the leading procurement organizations in the United States and works to assist donor families, coordinate the donation process and increase knowledge and awareness within the community regarding organ, tissue and eye donation.
