Barium Enema

Many radiological exams require specific patient preparation prior to the exam in order to ensure that the study is performed in the safest and most accurate manner possible. If you are scheduled for one of the following studies, follow the instructions exactly as written unless your MD says otherwise. If you have any questions or feel that you cannot comply with the instructions, be sure to call the Department of Radiology at (716) 278-4341.

A Barium Enema is a special x-ray of your colon.
This exam should be scheduled after an UGI or Small Bowel Series, if these procedures were also ordered.

Before Exam:
Please pick up a Fleet Prep Kit #1 at your local pharmacy at least two days prior to your scheduled appointment.

Day before Exam:

Do NOT take medication after midnight, if possible.
You will need to use an enema prep kit to cleanse the colon prior to the exam.
Begin prep kit 1 day prior to exam:
Drink the first half of bottle at 2 p.m.
Drink the second half of bottle at 4 p.m.

Day of Exam:
Use Ducolax suppository at approximately 6 a.m. the morning of the exam.
