CT Scan Abdomen or Pelvis

Many radiological exams require specific patient preparation prior to the exam in order to ensure that the study is performed in the safest and most accurate manner possible. If you are scheduled for one of the following studies, follow the instructions exactly as written unless your MD says otherwise. If you have any questions or feel that you cannot comply with the instructions, be sure to call the Department of Radiology at (716) 278-4341 or the CT Department at (716) 278-4166.

Day before Exam:
Do NOT have anything to eat or drink four (4) hours prior to the exam, with the exception of Redi-Cat, which will make your stomach and intestines show up with more detail on the CT scan. This solution is not intended to clean out your intestinal system. You do not have to hold it in and you may use the bathroom if necessary.

Drink two bottles of Redi-Cat:
Drink 1 bottle 2 hours before the time of your exam.
Drink the second bottle 1 hour before the time of your exam.

If you are 10 years of age or under: you only need to drink ONE bottle of contrast solution 1 hour prior to exam.

These instructions do not take the place of directions given to you by your MD.
