Stress Echocardiogram with Dobutamine

Many radiological exams require specific patient preparation prior to the exam in order to insure that the study is performed in the safest and most accurate manner possible. If you are scheduled for one of the following studies, follow the instructions exactly as written. If you have any questions or feel that you cannot comply with the instructions, be sure to call the Department of Cardiology at (716) 278-4404.

Before the Test:
Check with physician regarding medications that should be stopped due to some medications affecting the outcome of the test.
Nothing to eat or drink except water 2 hours prior to the test.
NO coffee or tea the day of the test.
NO alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to the test.
Bring a list of medications along with time of LAST dose.
It is strongly suggested that you arrange for someone to drive you to and pick you up from this appointment.

During the Test:
The test will be completed in less than 1 hour in 1 day.
This test does NOT require exercise during the test.
Upon arrival a nurse will start an IV for administering the Dobutamine.
The technician will place electrode patches on the chest. These electrodes are connected by wires to an electrocardiograph machine which records heartbeats.
Blood pressure and pulse and will be monitored before, during and following the test.
An Electrocardiogram (EKG) will be taken while at rest.
An Echocardiogram will be taken while at rest.
An intravenous line (IV) contrast solution may be required depending on the quality of the echocardiogram images.
