Ultrasound

General and Vascular

Many radiological exams require specific patient preparation prior to the exam in order to ensure that the study is performed in the safest and most accurate manner possible. If you are scheduled for one of the following studies, follow the instructions exactly as written unless your MD says otherwise. If you have any questions or feel that you cannot comply with the instructions, be sure to call the Department of Radiology at (716) 278-4341.

An ultrasound exam (sonogram) is a diagnostic exam that uses sound waves to produce images.

Day before Exam:
The preparation will vary slightly based on the body part being imaged:

For abdomen, gall bladder, liver, aorta, kidneys
Eat fat free food the night before your exam.
You should have nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

For Pelvic/Obstetrical
Drink 32 ounces of water 60 minutes before your exam.
Do NOT empty your bladder until after the examination.

For Prostate
Eat a light breakfast and/or lunch depending on your appointment time on the day of the exam.
You must administer a Fleet enema four (4) hours before your scheduled appointment.
                 
For Carotid or Extremity Doppler
There is NO preparation for Doppler exams

During the Exam:
A water based gel will be applied to the skin area that is being imaged.
