Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) and/or Small Bowel Series

Many radiological exams require specific patient preparation prior to the exam in order to ensure that the study is performed in the safest and most accurate manner possible. If you are scheduled for one of the following studies, follow the instructions exactly as written unless your MD says otherwise. If you have any questions or feel that you cannot comply with the instructions, be sure to call the Department of Radiology at (716) 278-4341.

An Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) is a special x-ray of your gastrointestinal (digestive) system in which images of your esophagus, stomach and small intestine are taken.
This exam should be scheduled prior to Barium Enema (BE).

Day before Exam:
You should have a light supper the night prior to the exam.
You should have nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
Do NOT take medication after midnight, if possible.
You should NOT smoke after midnight.

Day of Exam:
Do NOT have breakfast the morning of the exam.

During the Exam:
You will be asked to drink a barium solution for the exam.
If your doctor has ordered a small bowel exam, a series of timed x-rays will be taken until the barium reaches the end of your small intestine.
