Our History

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center traces its roots to 1895, when a group of approximately 200 Niagara Falls residents recognized the need for a local hospital and pledged 25 cents per month to establish one. What began as a community-driven effort more than 130 years ago has grown into Niagara County's largest and most comprehensive healthcare provider.

In its earliest years, Memorial operated as a small emergency hospital serving a rapidly growing industrial city. As Niagara Falls expanded through the 20th century, so did the hospital's services, facilities, and role in the community. The organization evolved from a modest local hospital into a regional medical center providing advanced inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, surgical, behavioral health, and rehabilitative services.

Throughout its history, Memorial has remained deeply connected to the community it serves. As a not-for-profit healthcare organization, the medical center has continually adapted to meet changing healthcare needs while maintaining its mission of providing quality care close to home. Over the decades, Memorial expanded beyond its main campus to include primary care offices, specialty centers, skilled nursing services, and community-based programs throughout Niagara County.

Memorial has achieved numerous milestones, including becoming the first hospital in Niagara County to be designated as a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health. The medical center has also developed specialized programs in cardiovascular care, women's health, behavioral health, rehabilitation, oncology, and surgical services, helping residents access advanced care without leaving the region.

In the 21st century, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has continued to invest in the future of healthcare in Niagara County through major facility improvements, technology upgrades, and strategic partnerships. These investments have strengthened access to specialty care, expanded outpatient services, enhanced medical education through residency programs, and reinforced Memorial's role as a healthcare leader and economic engine for the region. Since 2003 alone, the organization has invested tens of millions of dollars into its facilities and services.



Today, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center serves thousands of patients each year through its hospital campus, primary care network, specialty practices, and community health programs. More than a century after local residents came together to establish a hospital for Niagara Falls, Memorial remains guided by the same commitment: providing exceptional healthcare for the people of Niagara.
