Victoria never imagined a trip to the emergency room would become a fight for her life.
In June 2025, she arrived at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center by ambulance after her primary care provider urged her to seek emergency care. She was experiencing excruciating abdominal pain that would soon be diagnosed as a rare and life-threatening condition called a cecal volvulus, where the intestine twists and cuts off its own blood supply.
After reviewing her CT scan, Dr. Kappus quickly explained that emergency surgery was the only option.
During the two-hour operation, Dr. Kappus discovered Victoria had been born with a redundant colon, an unusually long colon that contributed to the condition. Her quick diagnosis and surgical expertise made all the difference.
"Dr. Kappus saved my life," says Victoria.
Following surgery, Victoria recovered in the Intensive Care Unit before continuing her care on Memorial's second floor. Along the way, she says the compassion and attentiveness of the nursing staff made a difficult experience easier.
Today, Victoria is grateful not only for the outcome, but for the team that was there when every second counted.
